Beth Ditto and Her ‘Fat Girls’
Gossip singer Beth Ditto, the self-described “fat, feminist lesbian from Arkansas,” has unveiled the second collection of her plus-size line — accommodating US sizes 14-28.
Except she’d rather not use the term plus; she’s fine with fat. Really. “I want all kinds of fat girls to feel amazing in these clothes,” she says. “We had such a great response to the first collection, specifically to the shapes people couldn’t find at this size before.”
Where Ditto collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier for her debut outing, this season she worked with two emerging creatives out of London, Charles Jeffrey and Hanna Moon. But idea of eschewing notions of ‘hiding’ or even ‘flattering’ a larger figure remains the same — these are clothes intended to celebrate and showcase it.
Essentially, the new collection of 11 pieces reimagines the best-loved shapes from the first season. Think sculptural shifts with cinched waists, a cocoon coat, a French-terry hooded dress, and sequin-embellished sweaters. Prints are based on make-up: oversized lashes, eye-pencil shavings, and dripping red nail polish.
