World’s Largest Pearl Discovered
At 75 pounds, this massive natural pearl is thought to be the world’s largest — certainly it’s hard to imagine one larger.
The colossal mollusk gem was originally found ten years ago by a fisherman in the Philippines when his anchor snagged the giant clam that housed it. Unaware of its value, he kept it as a good luck charm, until recently bringing it to the attention of Philippine officials.
It remains to be confirmed by gemologists that the pearl is indeed the world’s largest. Already it easily beats the current record holder, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, which weighs less than a quarter of the new discovery.
