The Playful Knits of Miguel Moyano

Showing his most recent collection, Foundation, during Colombiamoda in Medellín, Miguel Moyano based his knitted creations on the recent earthquake in neighboring Ecuador. The natural disaster touched him personally as his parents live in the town of Atacames. Since the quake and its aftershocks, their lives have changed drastically.

Typically following a catastrophe, the only thing left standing are the foundations of buildings. As a town’s foundations are rooted in culture and the home, Moyano’s collection showcased traditional Andean silhouettes and fabrics. Recalling the sweaters his mother crocheted for him as a small boy, the 27-year-old recreated the carnivals and festivals of his childhood in playful shapes using sheep’s wool and alpaca from Ecuador.
