Taking Stock of Colombian Designers

Like nearly every other country on earth, Colombia — its textile sector, in particular — was pounded in 2001 by profound global economic adjustments when China entered the World Trade Organization (WTO). That addition caused Colombia’s fashion exports to tumble by half from a peak of $1.5 billion.

But that was then, and Colombiamoda is now. Held each year in Medellín, the fashion fair has become one of the most important in Latin America. This year, 23k visitors — including Hint — from 55 countries toured its labyrinthine network of pavilions and observed some 35 designer runways. One of these, Agua Bendita, even pulled off a catwalk coup, enlisting Ariadna Gutierrez, aka Miss Colombia in last year’s doomed Miss Universe pageant, to model their signature looks, to roaring applause.
