Remember when Antonio Banderas enrolled in Central Saint Martins’ MA fashion course last year and everyone was like, huh? Well, now we know the method-acting to the madness. The actor will play the lead character in a biopic of Gianni Versace, nearly 20 years since the designer’s death.
The movie will be directed by Danish filmmaker Billie August and start filming in December of this year, first in Milan, then in Reggio Calabria, where the designer was born, and finally in Miami, where he was murdered on the street by Andrew Cunanan in 1997.
It should be noted that the project is being made without the authorization of the house of Versace, which released a statement saying, “The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.” Fiction or not, it’s sure to be vastly different from that melodramatic, made-for-TV Versace portrayal, that of Donatella Versace by Gina Gershon for Lifetime in 2013.
