Juergen Teller had doggedly pursued his own vision of popular portraiture and fashion photography, becoming a cult figure himself. Straddling the intersection of fine art and commercial photography, he’s consistently resisted the urge to idealize, romanticize or glamorize his subjects, revealing their imperfect perfection instead.
A new exhibit, Enjoy Your Life!, in The Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, offers a closer look at Teller’s work and his artistic legacy among the museum’s other displays. Several works sit in the foyer, where images of national victories and defeats otherwise greet visitors, while landscapes from Nürnberg sit quietly elsewhere. Two of Teller’s later series, Mit dem Teller nach Bonn and Plates/Teller, bring together earlier themes, both tender and exuberant, honest and touching.
