Continuing a tradition of courting censorship, a new ad for Calvin Klein’s ck2 fragrance is being examined by authorities in Russia for possibly violating the country’s so-called gay propaganda laws.
The TV spot, shot by Ryan McGinley, follows pairs of models (Victoria Brito, Dakota Garrett, Luka Sabbat, Erin Eliopulos, Kyle Mobus, Sung Jin Park, and twin sisters Baylee and Kelsey Soles) frolicking about Puerto Rico. Two opposite-sex couples are seen kissing, while two same-sex couples are close — e.g. riding a motorcycle shirtless — but never intimate. Nonetheless, someone reported it to censors in Arkhangelsk for containing “elements of propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia.”
If found guilty, Calvin Klein could face fines of around 1 million rubles ($15,000) and a suspension of sales in Russia.
