Beth Ditto to Launch Plus-Size Line with Jean Paul Gaultier
Gossip singer Beth Ditto, the self-described “fat, feminist lesbian from Arkansas,” has announced the release of a plus-size clothing line in collabs with Jean Paul Gaultier, who recently ditched his ready-to-wear line to focus on couture and special projects.
According to a statement, the line will feature “current styling with a vintage flair,” with an emphasis on “vibrant prints and well-tailored pieces, with silks, rayons and embroidery that are frequently missing from plus-size lines.”
“Big girls are beautiful and Beth is super beautiful,” said the designer. “Long live the beauty with shapes, boobs and bottoms. This is a new concept, a loose fit corset. And Beth fits it perfectly.” To launch the line, set for February, Ditto announced a limited-edition T-shirt ($165) that she designed with Gaultier, featuring his famed cone-bra corset.
The two go way back. Ditto walked Gaultier’s runway in 2010 and wed in a custom dress in 2013. But a plus-size collaboration is a first for the two, and the first time Gaultier has made clothes up to a size 30.
