Decided today, Hyères Festival’s Grand Prix for 2014 went to Kenta Matsushige, who edged out 9 other finalists, pared down from 311 applicants.

The Japanese-born, Paris-based designer (and graduate of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture) said his fall 2014 collection, which includes original accessories, was inspired by Yohji Yamamoto and Tadao Ando — presumably in the ecru color and simplicity of the architect’s preoccupation with concrete. He also spoke of the balance between the natural and the urban, specifically between hinabi (rustic beauty) and miyabi (urban beauty).

The 29th edition of the festival and competition, held annually in Villa Noailles on the French Riviera, was juried by Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony and Kenzo, as well as Chloe Sevigny, Spike Jonze, and Eric Wilson, InStyle fashion director. Previously winners include Viktor & Rolf, Henrik Vibskov, Gaspard Yurkievich, Felipe Oliveira Baptista, and Christian Wijnants.

The grand prize is valued at 15,000 euros, on top of a possible collaboration with Chanel’s famed ateliers (i.e. Lesage and Lemarié). The house has joined this year’s festival partners, committing to the festival for three years, joining Chloé in monetary support. The finalists’ work will remain on view through May 25, 2014.
