Ai Weiwei to Return to Jail
It seems like just yesterday we were talking about François Pinault going to jail — or rather, staging an art show in Paris’s most infamous jail. Now comes news that Ai Weiwei will participate in an exhibition, @Large, to be held in perhaps the most infamous prison of all: Alcatraz.
Next year, a selection of site-specific works depicting the universal struggle for equality and expression will go on display within the stone walls of the island prison in the San Francisco Bay. The show is being developed in conjunction with For-Site, a San Franciscan organization that puts on publicly funded artworks in the Bay Area. Visitors with a regular ticket to the Rock will be able to take in the exhibition.
Of course Ai Weiwei has been unable to visit the Rock, as he hasn’t been allowed to leave China since he was notoriously detained three years ago. However, For-Site has been sending him pertinent research materials, including two films that take place in the prison, Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and Escape from Alcatraz (1979).
