Jane & Serge & Charlotte & a Cigarette?

Thank goodness for flies on the wall. When Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin traipsed around the globe during the 70s, manifesting a torrid love affair that began when the two met on a movie set in 1968, Jane’s brother Andrew was there for all but the most romantic of moments. Hopefully not as creepy as it sounds, Andrew, a photographer, took thousands of candid pictures of the lovebirds during the legendary 12 years they were together, the vast majority of which have never been seen. Until now.

In Jane & Serge (Taschen, $59.99), designed by M/M (Paris), the photo album of a book includes not only text by Jane and Andrew Birkin — who, no longer a fly on the wall, has found his calling as an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director — but also a contact sheet, a poster, stickers, and an embroidered iron-on. But nothing compares to the cuteness of little Charlotte playing dress-up with Mommy and, wait, is that a cigarette she’s holding? Surely Dad’s doing — forever the provocateur!
