M.I.A. Bootlegs the Bootlegs for Versace Versus

In perhaps a clever response to her detractors and their claims of inauthenticity, M.I.A. has teamed up with Versace Versus on a collection based on the bootleg Versace merchandise she found in London markets as a teenager.

For the 19-piece women’s and men’s capsule, M.I.A. and Versus Versace created mash-up prints of past logos, gold medallions, the interlocking Greek key, and other counterfeit images. Items consist of T-shirts, printed jeans, silk shirts, jersey dresses and jackets.

“I love the energy of the street,” said Donatella Versace in a statement, “so when M.I.A. suggested we use bootlegs of Versace, I thought it was such an incredible idea. The collection is everything that I love about the new Versus Versace. It’s fast, loud, unafraid, and brings together the worlds of music and fashion.”

Available online and in select stores on October 16, 2013, the seasonless collection is the latest offering from the new Versus Versace, aimed at a younger audience. The launch will be accompanied by a digital GIF campaign, shot by Mexican photographer Jaime Martinez and featuring M.I.A. and her friends wearing the collection in East London markets.
