Your Faith in Lifetime Will be Restored When You See this Trailer

As if making amends for its Liz & Dick travesty, Lifetime returns with what promises to be a hilariously melodramatic portrayal of Donatella Versace. We reported last month that Gina Gershon would be playing the lead in the made-for-TV movie airing October 5. Somehow from the picture alone it was clear this was going to be the kind of unmissable haute camp LiLo should have channeled.

And now comes the trailer (below), which proves once and for all the actress’s chops, despite her unfortunate association with Showgirls. It’s like she was put on this earth to play the platinum-haired Italian designer. The deadpan accent, the blonde wig, the nose candy, the soundbites (“If you’re going to put me on a leash, it better be diamond-studded or you can kiss my ass”) are the makings of a modern television classic.

Naturally, the Versace folks are none too pleased, issuing a statement to WWD that reads in part, “Since Versace did not authorize the book on which it is based [House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival by Deborah Ball], the movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.” Fair enough, but what fantastic fiction it is.
