Keeping Up With the Karlisms
At his Chanel couture show this week, Karl Lagerfeld tried making his opinions known using only the language of showmanship, but couldn’t resist the urge to sound off. He’d intended for the two models in frothy white wedding dresses—accompanied by his godson, the 4-year-old son of former male model Brad Kroening—to convey his support for gay marriage. It’s an issue that’s heating up in France, with the country’s new president François Hollande vowing to see it through.
Speaking backstage after the show, however, Lagerfeld elaborated on his feelings about two-father households. “I am not so crazy about that,” he told reporters, dismissively describing the arrangement as “ordering babies.” “Two mothers seems to me to be better than two fathers,” he added. “A child without a mother, that’s a bit sad.”
Considering the brusqueness of previous Karlisms, it appears he was actually holding back. We imagine he has pointier words for Pierre Berge, by whom he’s “horribly shocked,” as he put it, for equating the compensation of a surrogate mother with paying a factory worker for the use of his arms.
