While not as riveting as his parody of Gangnam Style, Ai Weiwei’s latest video project is nonetheless screwy. Called “How to Scientifically Remove a Shiny Screw with Chinese Characteristics From A Moving Vehicle in Eighteen Turns,” the homemade video taken by the artist himself, apparently, follows him on a bus making its way through Beijing—notably passing by Tiananmen Square—while literally unscrewing a screw. It’s thought to be a statement on the Communist Party of China and the new 18th National Congress, which took office two weeks ago. It’s all code: the number 18, “Chinese characteristics” (a reference to dubious party doctrine), and science, which is the incoming president’s stated legacy.
