Karl Lagerfeld Comments On Nicolas Ghesquière’s Exit from Balenciaga

Interviewed by Reuters at the Paris launch of his Chanel Little Black Jacket exhibit of photographs at the Grand Palais, Karl Lagerfeld had some short but enlightening things to say about Balenciaga’s star designer, Nicolas Ghesquière, leaving his post after 15 years—things that dovetail nicely with our own theory, we might add.

“Perhaps Nicolas wants to have his own label, which is not a bad idea. And it would not be a bad idea if somebody such as Bernard Arnault would invest in a new label because there are so many old labels (in the LVMH group),” he said, before turning it back to himself and speculation about a Chanel exit: “We (my team and I) only think in terms of one collection after the next collection. In fashion, I am very much against projection in the far away future.”
