Jean Paul Gaultier is often inspired by can-can, the old-timey French dance famous for its black stockings and high-energy rustling of petticoats. So, if you’ll pardon the pun, it makes complete sense that the designer and new creative director of Diet Coke, following Karl Lagerfeld’s illustrious tenure, would translate his racy bottle designs into…cans! Called Night & Day, the two cans are the first in the soft drink’s history to come about from a design collaboration. Aspartame addicts everywhere are cheering—or just jonesing for their next swig.
In other Gaultier news, his blockbuster retrospective that launched two years ago at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, before traveling to Dallas, is now headed to MAPFRE in Madrid (October 2012). The Iberian debut will pay particular attention to the designer’s costumes for various Pedro Almodóvar films, among other Spanish collaborations.
