Deck-Brained
Of course today’s youth isn’t in trouble. But if you’re looking for trouble, look no further than the video for The Presets’ latest single, from their upcoming sophomore album Pacifica (out September 14). The hypnotic, seemingly coded imagery spliced together by renowned digital director Yoshi Sodeoka could be described thusly: you’re feverishly playing vintage Nintendo and have one twitching eye on the game and the other eye on endlessly looping riot footage. Plus you’re tripping balls on bath salts, cooking tin foil in the microwave, and receiving secret messages from outer space.
The track, too, is brain-scrambling. Ignore the faux-nihilistic lyrics about wayward teens and appreciate it for its true brilliance: the jacked-up, acid-house thump-thumping that harks back to the early-90s rave scene. (You have to have your headphones on—tinny computer speakers not allowed.) And remember, the young denizens of those seedy warehouses are now grown up, cleaned up and all around you, even rising to become Dior designer…
