Marc Jacobs cited Tender Is the Night, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel of self-destruction set on the French Riviera, and 70s-era Jamaican punk rock as the inspiration for his spring 2013 men’s collection. It’s hard not to read into that with sordid notions of transatlantic intrigue, but chances are he means it visually, or as a counterpoint to the much-heralded Great Gatsby moment that hasn’t yet seized the runways.

Suits alternated between boxy, noir styles and beachier plaid or striped linen versions. An all-over paisley-ish print emerged, engulfing top-buttoned shirts, blousons, slim pants with truncated hems (revealing no socks) and board shorts. If we didn’t know better, we’d say there was a pre-Castro Cuban vibe…
