Something Different: Toilet Paper Billboard

Today, those mischievous rascals at Toilet Paper magazine, artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, unveiled a giant billboard at West 18th Street and 10th Avenue in Chelsea. At first the image blends in with the surrounding billboards, but reveals itself to be a statement on those very advertisements. Red-lacquered and ringed female fingers seem detached from their hands, popping out of a blue velvet backdrop in an ironic comment on the illusory power of photography and the deceptive allure of luxury.

It’s the fourth in the High Line Billboard series of installations, made possible by the support of property-owner and kindred art-lover Edison Properties. Following billboards by artists John Baldessari, Anne Collier, and David Shrigley, the Toilet Paper piece will remain on view for through Saturday, June 30.
