Keeping Up With the Karlisms

Apparently now even the Japanese are big in Japan. Following an eight-year absence, Karl Lagerfeld was in Tokyo to launch his new book of photographs, The Little Black Jacket, and to recreate Chanel’s spring couture show. Here’s the backhanded pearl of wisdom he gave WWD about the island nation just weeks after calling Adele “a little too fat” and getting a dressing-down by Madonna as a result…

“It’s changed a lot but it’s changed for the better I think. I noticed that people became bigger than before because now they eat more cake and sweets and things like this that they didn’t do in the past. There’s a real change in the look of the Japanese people. Normally, before, they were all tiny. It’s the kind of beauty you get from junk food.”
