The CFDA Fashion Award Nominees Are In

Read aloud by CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg in her West Village studio last night, the nominees for the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards were named. Along with the usual cast of characters—Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, the Proenza boys—this year’s line-up includes some exciting surprises and at least one head-scratcher (Johnny Depp gets the Fashion Icon Award, really?).

The red-carpet event, which will take place on June 4th at Lincoln Center, hosted by SNL’s Seth Meyers, promises to be bigger than ever as the organization celebrates its 50th fashionable year. The major categories will be a reunion of sorts for the most recent class of the CFDA Fashion Fund, with Joseph Altuzarra, Pamela Love, Antonio Azzuolo, Suno, and Creatures of the Wind all nominated in their respective categories, and the Founders Award going to Andrew Rosen, founder of Theory and a Fashion Fund mentor.

Unexpectedly, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons will receive the International Award, for “making an outstanding creative contribution to the world of fashion.” The provocateur—who recently showed a wild collection of nearly flat, cartoon-like dresses and coats—joins the ranks of past winners Alexander McQueen, Dries Van Noten and Yohji Yamamoto. No word yet if the reclusive designer attend, but if she does, it will be a rare public outing for the avant-gardist who grants few interviews, describes each collection with just a word or two, and hasn’t had a formal photo taken since 2004.
