Inspiring us right now: these intimate drawings by the recently passed Lucian Freud—grandson of Sigmund Freud and Britain’s pre-eminent artist for most of his career—who didn’t just paint nudes of large people with putty-like white skin (Leigh Bowery, Sue Tilley) or nudes of thin people with lanky limbs and tan lines (Kate Moss). He also drew prodigiously. A collection of these drawings were recently exhibited in the UK and have been compiled in a book, Lucian Freud Drawings, by the artist’s biographer, William Feaver. Freud, who died in July of last year, is also the subject of an exhibition currently on view at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
