A Store Is Born: Marni in Beijing

The Chinese are embracing the Western notion of shopping as recreation with gusto. But why should Alexander McQueen and Maison Martin Margiela have all the retail fun in China? (We mean that literally; Margiela has installed a multi-floor slide in its new location there.) Marni is the latest European house to open shop in Beijing—not just any shop, but its largest in the world.

Designer Consuelo Castiglioni has worked closely with the architecture firm Sybarite to translate the quirky Italian label’s signature geometry and earthy mineral colors—plus a crimson staircase in honor of the host country—to the two-floor space in the swanky Sanlitun district. Which apparently now is the happiest place on earth.
