Mandy Coon has quickly become the downtown goth girl’s favorite new talent with her hard-lined, bondage-inspired silhouettes—and lots and lots of black. But at her spring showing, Coon decided to open up that comfort zone juuust a bit by throwing in pops of color, jolting color. That ubiquitous edge, however, was still front and center.
Of the 21-look show, which Coon’s pal Jamie Bochert opened, the first few numbers down the runway were perhaps the most interesting with their head-turning electric blue and juxtaposition of leather and silk. Asymmetrical hems abounded on skirts and dresses with touches of pleated chiffon and buckled straps, adding to the deconstructed aesthetic. Splashes of canary yellow were a welcome sight that left us wanting more. Is Coon learning to embrace all the shades of the rainbow? With baby steps.
