From Garage with Love
With the continued demise of print journalism, art publications seem to be doing just fine, thankyouverymuch. A new niche mag makes its debut practically every day. True to form, there’s one more to add to the list today.
Helmed by Pop’s former editor-in-chief, Dasha Zhukova, Garage looks like a carefully curated zine, studiously low-budget and vaguely Soviet in design. Named after Zhukova’s art space in Moscow and scheduled to come out during New York Fashion Week, Garage is a blend of art of fashion, featuring collaborations between renegade figures in both worlds.
It’s all the rage these days to release an issue with multiple cover images, and far be it from Garage to buck the trend. One of its three debut covers shows a Hedi Slimane photo of a nude female pelvis strategically covered by a peel-off Damien Hirst butterfly sticker. Another cover is a creepy dollhouse dreamed up by artist Dinos Chapman and photographer Nick Knight, featuring a puppet version of model Lily Donaldson. Rounding out the trifecta is a smiley-face graphic by artist Richard Prince, an artistic rendering of the Kool-Aid Man without his frosty red pitcher of a body.
Inside, one of the fashion stories is made entirely out of food. An Alexander McQueen dress is constructed from romaine lettuce, a Prada dress from citrus and a Moncler coat from anchovies.
The world of fashion editorial just got a whole lot more interesting. We like.
