Band of Outsiders at Pitti
“See that sunny spot? That’s It!” read the postcard-reminiscent invitation that gathered an impressive fashion crowd in a Fascist-era industrial building on the outskirts of Florence.
This is where LA-based label Band of Outsiders, the special guest designer of Pitti Uomo’s 80th edition (along with Rodarte), brought West Side Story’s dancing street gangs, the Sharks and Jets, to present its spring 2012 men’s and resort women’s collections. The musical’s choreography and love-conquers-all message made for a cheery, energetic show, while the brightly colored clothes stood in stark contrast to the impressive backdrop of an abandoned cigar factory. Combining American sportswear references—varsity jackets, polo shirts, bermuda shorts, boat shoes—with high-end tailoring, the show confirmed Band of Outsiders’ one-to-watch standing.
“My shows are usually an indulgence of my boyhood fantasies and some sort of cinematic expression,” said Band of Outsiders’ designer, Scott Sternberg. “What better way to show clothes in motion than through dance?”
