Gearing Up for the Venice Biennale
While the 54th Venice Biennale doesn’t officially kick off for another week, the art crowd has already begun its descent upon the sinking city for a week of previews and parties. We’ve been fielding alerts—many from fashion houses Louis Vuitton and Prada, more on those later—but we’re mostly excited to check out a few choice exhibits. Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla (Puerto Rican and Cuban, respectively) are stirring up buzz as ones to watch in the American Pavilion. From what we’ve heard they’re showing gymnasts contorting around plywood furniture. What? Meanwhile, we’re expecting something dark and monumental from Christian Boltanski in the French Pavilion. Also looking forward to what newcomers Saudi Arabia, Haiti and Rwanda bring to the picture.
For Biennale-goers, Christie’s has put out a handy and free app detailing where the pavilions are located throughout Venice and who’s showing in them. Also included are nifty tips on restaurants and other local spots. You’ll be hearing a lot more from us once we alight on Venice’s hallowed shores. Till then!
