Premium vodka label Ketel One has launched the highly anticipated next generation of its “Gentlemen, This is Vodka” campaign. Directed by Academy Award nominee David O. Russell (The Fighter, Three Kings), the three-part series tells the classic tale of an epic—but responsible, of course—night out among friends. The new single from Brooklyn band Alberta Cross, “Money for the Weekend,” appears in all three TV spots. David O. Russell also directed six music videos from the band’s new must-listen album, set to drop later this summer.
Hint: We hear that “Money for the Weekend” was inspired by Keith Richards. How so?
Alberta Cross: Well, musically. I was reading his autobiography and he was talking a lot about the tunings he used back in the day and I guess now too. Open blues tunings. So I tried them out and found them really inspiring. And I guess Money for the Weekend came out of one of the jams. Other than that I reckon Keith is the king! So he’s inspired me in a lot of different ways.
Speaking of weekends, what’s the craziest you’ve ever had?
Oh dear. There have been many! On the road every day is a weekend really, so it’s all the same. But when I’m off the road I like weekdays more than weekends because they are more chilled and the bars etc. aren’t as packed. My maddest weekend has probably been at one of the many festivals we’ve done. Bonnaroo a couple of years ago probably takes the prize.
The band is based in Brooklyn, but your lead singer is from Sweden. How does that translate to your music?
I’m actually based in L.A. these days. But Terry is still in New York. The rest of the guys have been staying in a house in L.A. while we finished the record. We all grew up in different sides of the world really. Which is a great thing cause we all bring different things to the band. I grew up in Sweden then moved to London in my teens and lived there for nine years and then the last three years I lived in New York, before I moved to L.A. I’m a restless soul.
What was it like to work with David O. Russell on your music videos?
It was brilliant! When they told me he was going to do it, I thought it was pretty hilarious that we were going to have an Oscar-nominated director directing a bunch of spaced-out rocker dudes. Good luck David, you know? But it all worked out and they look pretty damn awesome. It was a new experience for all of us and we were all for it.
What are your future plans for the band?
We are just about to finish our new album. It took a bit of time to get it done but you will hear that it was worth it. The first single “Money for the Weekend” is out very soon. We’re really excited to get on the road and to start playing the new songs live for everyone. We’re out doing festivals all through the summer and then when the album is out I reckon we will do longer tours through the US and Europe and all around the globe. It’s gonna be good! See you out on the road, folks!
