Hint Tip
Ecuadorian artist Viva Ruiz, whose irony-laden work deals with the crosscurrents of cultures and races, presents a multimedia afternoon of “pro-immigration invocation sensation” at MoMA PS1, transforming the space into a Latin social club, complete with tropical food, drinks and reggaeton. A lifelong dancer who originally performed at Deitch Projects, Viva Ruiz has shared the stage with Debbie Harry, Danzig, and the Dazzle Dancers. At MoMA PS1, Ruiz will premiere his new telenovela Immigrantula, featuring an animated short by Miguel Villalobos and score by Gavin Russom, with whom Ruiz has a band, The Crystal Ark (DFA). Following the screening, a rather facetious “prosperity ritual” will take place for those who have crossed the border illegally and are stealing American jobs. A rare performance by Latin art-house group Escandalo, with artist Desi Santiago and “beatmaster” duo Automagic, rounds out the afternoon.
