Camera-shy though they may be, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are getting ready to take center stage in June, when they headline Pitti W in Florence (along with Band of Outsiders, who’s headlining Pitti Uomo). We hope they’re ready to channel their inner black swan, as they follow in some impressive footsteps, including Haider Ackermann, Gareth Pugh and Proenza Schouler.
Of course, the sisters are no blushing ingénues either. This latest coup, a European debut of sorts, comes fast on the heels of a number of high-profile accolades, including their much-lauded museum show at MOCA and dressing a certain preggers Oscar winner (hint: her name is Natalie Portman). Still, the occasion calls for their A-game, and will feature a special collection.
You can bone up on the sisters’ handiwork in their new book, whose release date was pushed back a bit, now set for June. Simply titled Rodarte, the book’s official page is here and its new Amazon page is here. Shot by Catherine Opie and Alex Roth, it showcases the sisters’ impressive archives shot on the nubile and student body of UCLA, where Opie teaches photography.
