Who better to make architectural shoes than kin of an architectural god? Enter Rem D. Koolhaas, nephew of the world-renowned urbanist who, along with shoemaker Galahad Clark, co-founded the provocatively named United Nude in 2003. Not just for tottering gallerists anymore, the duo’s small feats of engineering are increasingly the preferred vertiginous heels of bipeds everywhere. With an expanded spring line (using new materials, namely wood), a debut men’s style (a traditional oxford, but with a head-scratching, hollowed-out heel), designer collaborations (Iris van Herpen), and a new New York store, United Nude is reaching all new heights. Investing in a pair is almost like buying actual property, but without all the paperwork.
