It seems the damning video that emerged yesterday—in which John Galliano is seen and heard drunkenly slurring the words “I love Hitler. People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be fucking gassed”—was the last straw for Dior execs. In a curt statement released today, Dior said it had begun dismissal proceedings based on the designer’s “odious behavior.”

There do not appear to be any Galliano supporters left (with the possible exception of Italian Vogue’s Franca Sozzani, Olivier Zahm and Patricia Field). This morning, Natalie Portman, the face of Miss Dior Chérie who opted to wear Rodarte over Dior at the Oscars, issued a statement of her own. “I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments,” it said. “As an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”

Unbelievably, the Dior show is expected go on as scheduled this week. (Even more unbelievably, Galliano’s own show may as well.) But now that Galliano has been sacked, fashion’s chattering class has begun the inevitable game of guessing who will replace him. All the usual names have been bandied, but as John Galliano was recommended by Anna Wintour, guesses so far seem to be centered around her other protégés. We will, of course, keep you updated.
