“Gay Angels” — Perfume Genius
The name may sound like a duty-free outlet in an airport terminal, but Perfume Genius is anything but cheap and commercial. In fact, Seattle-based singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas has the most exquisitely depressing voice we’ve heard since Antony and the Johnsons. Depression runs deep in the debut album; one of the tracks is about a suicidal, pedophiliac high school teacher—like something out of a Gus Van Sant film. Please no techno remixes.
