Walter Van Beirendonck

“The collection was about this Maya prediction that something big is going to happen in 2012, the connectivity between people, and tribal Africa,” Walter Van Beirendonck told Hint after an erratic fall show starring an exclusively black cast.

It began interestingly enough, with models sporting gray suits, gigantic circular necklaces, and a terrific Mohawk made of antennae-like African plaits. Other intriguing ideas included shirts and jackets open down the sides for a poncho effect, and the swaggering finale of knitted numbers.

Unfortunately, the sexual undercurrent that we’ve come to expect from the designer was missing, but what seemed to be a compelling homage to the Chanel suit made up for it.
