Comme des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo may have reached her 68th year, but don’t expect the grand dowager of the Japanese vanguard to slow down any time soon. While others her age are scouting condos in Florida, she’s going full-speed ahead with her unorthodox empire of polka dots and dropped crotches, racking up more collaborations and one-off projects than we can keep track of. Her latest? She’s diving into the bustling Chinese market with I.T Beijing Market, a mega-store aimed at bringing the Comme vision to an eager Commie audience.
For the occasion, the notoriously shy designer sat down with WWD and talked about her future, including the possibility of selling her brand. Not surprisingly, she’s not terribly sentimental, noting she’s open to the idea, but “I don’t think there’s anyone who would want to buy it.” She’s also begun mulling the possibility of a successor, although she’s not too keen on new designers either, adding, sharply, “They lack discipline…They’re not strict enough with themselves.” It looks like for the time being, she’ll have to hike up those dhotis and keep at it.
