Early Oscar Buzz for Rodarte’s Costumes in Black Swan

Longtime movie buffs and horror film connoisseurs, Kate and Laura Mulleavy might be poised to get their share of the Tinseltown spotlight. Early Oscar buzz is already building for their original costumes in Darren Aronofsky’s ballet epic Black Swan. A tale of dark obsession and mental breakdown, the project was clearly in tune with the sisters’ sensibility (you’ll recall that they got much of their design education watching slasher flicks for a year straight at their parents’ home in Pasadena).

Infusing the classic tutu with their signature sinister eroticism, the costumes emerge as characters themselves, holding their own against Natalie Portman’s dramatic turn, which is already earning her front-runner status. It’s clearly no small feat to accomplish with tulle and glitter. With their luck racking in awards, we wouldn’t be surprised if a golden statuette found its way to their mantel. You can judge the handiwork for yourself when Black Swan opens this Friday, December 3.
