Glenn O’Brien Isn’t Sitting Still, Post-Interview
Don’t expect Glenn O’Brien to sit still in his post-Interview days. He’s keeping his dance card full, partnering with Sisley on a project to benefit the Warhol Museum, obviously a cause near and dear to his heart. Inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat’s original customized leather jacket—which was adorned with the artist’s signature squiggles—O’Brien has enlisted 17 artist friends (who also happen to be among New York’s new guard) to create one-off pieces. The results are as varied as their creators, but our faves include Dan Colen’s studded ode to Grease and Brad Kahlhamer’s trippy vision quest. But the prize for most creative goes to Tom Sachs, who didn’t just distress his jacket, but took a blowtorch to it.
Along with O’Brien, the jackets are currently making the rounds, debuting at Milan Fashion Week before being auctioned off at Christie’s New York. But this might not just be an innocent goodwill tour for O’Brien. We hear he’s working on a new magazine, and tapping his enviable list of contacts as contributors. Nothing is set in stone, but it proves there’s life after a well-publicized editorial tiff.
