London Fashion Week Pauses to Pay Its Respects to Alexander McQueen
The London fashion milieu took a moment this morning to pay its respects to one of its own: the late, great Alexander McQueen. Clad in black, nearly a thousand friends and admirers gathered at St. Paul’s Cathedral to mourn the loss of the trailblazing yet troubled genius—and to celebrate his life. They included Anna Wintour, Daphne Guinness, Kate Moss, Stella McCartney, Naomi Campbell, and Hussein Chalayan, some of whom gave moving accounts of the designer’s notorious ways (he ducked out of his first American Vogue shoot and lived to tell the tale, Wintour noted). As a final gesture, Bjork took to the stage in full McQueen regalia—looking like an angelic messenger from outer space in parchment wings and a floor-length feathered skirt—and sang a stirring rendition of Gloomy Sunday.
