Proenza Schouler

While watching Proenza Schouler’s spring 2011 collection, one word kept coming to mind: bipolar. Which is to say, it didn’t make a lot of sense. It seems as though the rich downtown girl in search of “cool” has softened up and returned uptown—or fled straight to Palm Springs. We were left wondering: who is this girl who pairs a limp, Chanel-esque tweed jacket with an asymmetrical grungy skirt? Or who wears a chunky, New Age necklace over a smock resembling a giant ink blot? And why would she even dream of putting on a shapeless, diaphanous dress covered in patches of ruffle applique? That’s neither aspiring socialite nor Coachella. While the colors were festive, and the Japanese tie-dye pieces looked great in many cases, the lack of cohesion made this a difficult collection to truly appreciate.
