Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress at the VMAs Was Supposed to Be About Gay Rights

As if wearing a bikini tartar on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan wasn’t enough to get PETA’s organic cotton panties in a twist, Lady Gaga upped the ante at Sunday’s VMAs. The singer covered wore a dress fashioned from raw meat, mostly the cheap cut variety, i.e. rib (the bodice) and flank steak (perched limply atop her My Little Pony-colored ‘do). When asked by Ellen DeGeneres what kind of a message she was trying to send, Gaga insisted the ensemble was about gay rights and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones,” she explained. DeGeneres, a vegan, basically chose to ignore the Gagster’s nonsensical reply. The gays won’t, so expect the stench of uncooked meat wafting through the streets of lower Manhattan this Halloween.
