A few years ago, when we first showed you this clip of Steven Meisel spazzing out in the 1983 movie Portfolio, it had just been released on Youtube and immediately became a mini-sensation. Who knew the hermetic photographer behind the oversized sunglasses and bandannas could be so campy, so wild, so human? (His direction to Nancy Donahue—”Naaaancy, the eyes!”—is priceless, right up there with “No wire hangers, ever!”) We watched it again today and found ourselves chortling and squealing all over again, reveling in its fresh-faced, big-haired sparkle. This was, after all, the innocent era in modeling just moments before the roar of the supes. If only more fashion titans had this kind of droll chutzpah to keep us entertained through the ages…
