Jenny Holzer Can Even Text on Shoes
Having already adorned T-shirts, footstools, stickers and condoms with her often dark, always provocative aphorisms, Jenny Holzer is now taking her text messages a step further—literally. The artist partnered with Keds to create a collection of canvas sneakers printed with the words “Protect Me From What I Want,” benefitting the Whitney Museum, host to her 2009 installation, Protect Protect. Granted, Holzer’s entrée into the fashion world also meant making artistic concessions to the footwear powers-that-be. “I was hot for ‘The Future Is Stupid’ on black high-tops,” Holzer told the NY Times of her first—and ultimately rejected—choice. We might have to side with the Man on this one, since the phrase could have easily been Sharpie-d onto our Converse kicks circa eighth grade.
