Rodarte Wins National Design Award

Kudos to Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy, winners of the 2010 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for fashion. No strangers to the Smithsonian-affiliated New York institution, the duo curated a small solo exhibition there, Rodarte: Quicktake, back in February, replete with celeb-heavy Vogue-sponsored shindig and stellar reviews. Last year the sister act lost to Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein, but this year they edged out Behnaz Sarafpour and Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler for a win. Come October 14, Kate and Laura will be honored along with winners in other categories at a fancy to-do at Cipriani, perhaps including honorary event patron Michelle Obama. Though a no-show last year, the First Lady also happens to be a fan of the girls’ work—and may just need the fashionable distraction from fall’s midterm elections.
