Maison Martin Margiela Cruise 2011

Even if a white jumpsuit covering just half of the body isn’t your fruity drink of choice this resort season, Maison Martin Margiela still has a few tricks up its deconstructed sleeve. Working with a predominantly taupe and black palette this go-round, the team tempers quirky (sewn-shut hems, a drop-crotch pant/dress hybrid) with chic (elongated military-inspired jackets, high-waisted pants). Fall’s knee-length skirts trailed by sheer panels were given a new twist—literally—via a knot-like appendage dangling from the front and the addition of pants almost slim enough to be leggings. In lieu of pairing a short dress with something as pedestrian as opaque black tights, the team created yet another variant on leg coverings: hose-like until the ankle, where they pool into a slim cuff. Perfect for pasty types sans yachting plans this winter.
