Rodarte Goes to the Movies

At their peak, Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy watched an average of six films a day, and spent one summer “hanging out with all the guys who worked at Blockbuster,” Laura recalled at last night’s FIT-sponsored Fashion Conversation. Anyone familiar with the sister act knows the degree to which film has influenced past collections, which also often reference the quirky and dark sides of the Golden State. “If you saw The Lost Boys,” Laura remarked of her NorCal hometown, “you know where we grew up.” Though the duo may not have as much time for moviegoing these days, their interest in film shows little sign of waning. Following news yesterday that the sisters created 40 costumes for the upcoming Natalie Portman flick, Black Swan, comes word today of another cinematic collaboration with Rialto Pictures. In honor of Breathless’ 50th anniversary, Kate and Laura have co-designed two limited-edition T-shirts, one of which is modeled after the newspaper tee donned by Jean Seberg in the Godard classic. Coming to Barneys, Colette and Dover Street Market soon.
