A Store Is Born

Martin Margiela may have left the building, but the Maison parties on. Next up for the lab-coated super-team, a temporary new store in Miami’s sleek, chic Design District. We know what you’re thinking: we need another pop-up shop like Florida needs another retiree. But rest assured, this is simply a scouting outpost until a permanent home can be found. True to its calling, the latest locale is tricked out in full Maison regalia, down to the signature labyrinth of mirrors and antiquated whitewash. More importantly, it’s stocked full of the Margiela universe, including the full range of numerically ordered collections: men’s, women’s, shoes and eyewear, as well as the new all-white Asteriks (*) line, which we suspect might actually be invisible.

If this all this white-on-white action is giving you a case of Martin nostalgia, not to fret. Beginning June 3, Somerset House in London will host the much-anticipated Maison Martin Margiela 20 exhibit. In close collaboration with MoMu fashion museum in Antwerp, this third leg of the traveling show traces the illustrious career of the Belgian eccentric, from his beginnings in the eighties through his last whimsical forays. Witty, jarring and visionary (where would big shoulders be without him?), the retrospective pays homage to his daring deconstruction of dress codes and, perhaps even more daring, his excellent sense of humor.
