Make or Break

Let’s just say ceramic artist Bouke de Vries had us at “Mrs. Wildenstein.” Citing the socialite-cum-lioness’s desire for self-made perfection, de Vries explores its antithesis in his latest exhibition, A Grand Tour of My Mind, opening tomorrow at Gloriamaria Gallery in an unofficial kick-off of Milan Fashion Week. De Vries, who worked with John Galliano and Stephen Jones prior to becoming a conservator, deconstructs shattered vases and glassware to emphasize their imperfections. Of course, the artist’s penchant for the flawed, broken and undesirable extends beyond 18th-century Chinese vessels. One glass-encased porcelain figurine, called No No No, bears an uncanny resemblance to Amy Winehouse.
