Hint Tip: Malcolm McLaren
Updating philosopher Walter Benjamin’s unfinished literary work, Paris — Capital of the 19th Century, ever-industrious Malcolm McLaren has created a film montage that pays tribute to the city in a visual, kitschy kind of way. In Paris — Capital of the 21st Century, an advertising clip directed by Jean-Luc Godard is followed by a silent movie from the 20s for French cigarette brand Gitanes, and so on. It’s a little like music sampling for the film-student set. Private viewing this Monday at the Swiss Institute, followed by a conversation between British novelist Michael Bracewell and McLaren himself. By invitation only.
