Alexandre Herchcovitch
Whereas most of Alexandre Herchcovitch’s fellow Brazilians follow futebol, not football, for spring the designer clearly drew inspiration from the latter, decidedly American sport. Exaggerated linebacker shoulders, athletic socks pulled mid-calf and even football-shaped clutches figured in the show. Bright racerback tanks and tops—fashioned from that most Brazilian of materials, rubber—recalled the national pastime, as did team jersey-esque nylon dresses, while lace-trimmed, slim-legged pants and shiny shorts resembled compression leggings donned by NFL players. The most theatrical nod to the sport came at the show’s finale, when two colorful, caged hoop skirts came out, conjuring face masks. Alas, no sweaty, sexy athletes were on hand to give us their thoughts, but suffice it say, Herchcovitch scored.
